Two adult education students and five high school students from EHOVE Career Center attended the SkillsUSA National Competition in Atlanta, GA this June. Cosmetology student Becca Bohannon of Norwalk, who will graduate in September, placed third to earn a bronze medal.
Adult Ed Cosmetology instructor Deb Bunting said that Bohannon had multiple steps to complete in her competition. After submitting a drawing and description of her hair color project, she created it on a mannequin. She also had to take a Cosmetology test and a SkillsUSA knowledge test. Her project included hair color and three different haircuts, and helped her also win a prize pack of hair appliances, products and a gift card.
The other students competed in various categories related to their EHOVE program which included cabinetmaking, healthcare and manufacturing. Although they did not achieve a top three medal, staff accompanying the students said they made the most of the opportunity by gaining even more experience in their industries' standards of workplace readiness.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The Ohio chapter provides its 31,500+ career-technical education members, which includes many EHOVE students, the opportunity to participate in local, regional, state and national competitive events, and encourages students to give back to the community through various community service activities.
