EHOVE Adult Career Center is proud to announce that Ariah Avila of Mansfield has been selected as the winner of the EHOVE School of Surgical Technology Preceptor of the Year Award and $100 in gift cards.

Preceptors are key to students’ training at the clinical sites.  Avila is a Certified Surgical Technologist at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. As a preceptor, she supports students from EHOVE’s program while they are learning during surgery at Mansfield Hospital.  Preceptors are scrubbed in with the students and assist with educating them on procedures and doctors’ preferences. They are an integral part of the student learning process as students must complete 560 hours of clinical experience and 120 cases in the various surgical specialties.

“Positive clinical preceptors make a tremendous impact on the education of future surgical technologists,” said EHOVE Surgical Tech Program Coordinator Kristi Lynn Jones.  “We couldn’t think of a more deserving person for this award. Ariah is always a joy to see in the field. She is a very positive person.”

Jones says the response to the first award was very positive and all nominations were shared with managers at the clinical sites to pass along how their preceptors are making a difference in educating students.

Avila is also a 2017 graduate of EHOVE School of Surgical Technology where she was the class valedictorian.  “This award means SO much!” she said. “I am beyond grateful to receive this award. So many times I find that the students I'm trying to inspire are actually the ones that end up inspiring me. Thank you all so very much!”

This first annual award was sponsored by EHOVE and The Bellevue Hospital.  Of 26 total nominations for the award, Avila was nominated by Gabrielle Grant, Venessa Wenninger and Brandi Musselman, all from EHOVE’s School of Surgical Technology’s Class of 2018.

“Ariah is very patient and knowledgeable of instruments and procedure,” said Grant who is now a Certified Surgical Technologist at The Cleveland Clinic. “She is very welcoming and sweet. I like that she lets me set up my mayo stand and backtable and then gives me tips for improvement.”

“She is hardworking, knowledgeable and patient,” said Wenninger. “Students would be very lucky to have her as a preceptor.”

“Ariah is so friendly and patient with students; she sets students up to succeed,” said Musselman, who also attended EHOVE’s program and was the valedictorian for the Class of 2018.

“I have known Ariah since she did her clinical rotation with us, and she has always been a very hard worker with patient safety as her number one priority,” said Jenna Houtz, RN, BSN, and OR Nurse Manager at Mansfield Hospital. “Not only does she keep the patient the center of her focus, but she comes to work every day with a smile on her face and the most positive attitude. The entire OR staff truly enjoys having her as a part of our team and we all look forward to watching Ariah grow in her profession as an amazing scrub tech.”
