Five students anxiously stood in front of the entire student body at EHOVE Career Center on February 16, waiting to find out who would win. The prize was a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contest was part of the school’s Perfect Attendance Initiative. Five students qualified for this drawing, having had perfect attendance since the beginning of the 2008 school year through the day of the contest. Sara Hugo, Vermilion High School, ended up being the lucky winner.

Students qualify as having perfect attendance if they have no absences (excused or unexcused, except for school-related activities), no tardies, and no suspensions. Drawings will be made weekly, quarterly and yearly. Students can also win big prizes for perfect attendance each week, each quarter, and at the end of the semester. The prizes include MP3 players, iPods, gift cards, Wii game system and Guitar Hero.
Getting a chance to win is simple, if students follow the basics. Be here, be on time, and make good decisions. Assistant Principal Rod Smith said, “Good attendance is the first step to a successful education as well as employment. The attendance initiative provides an incentive for students to create and achieve short term attendance goals for themselves, with the hope that they will see the long term positive effects for themselves and the business/company of which they will someday be a part.”
To determine today’s winner from the five finalists, students took turns selecting an envelope taped to the car. Inside, that student won a Meijer gift card, but then had to turn over the card to find out who was eliminated from winning. The final student whose name hadn’t been called was the winner!
Assistant Director Mark Ringlein emceed the event and announced that indeed Sara Hugo was the winner. Hugo was shocked and took a moment to realize she'd won. The student body’s cheers filled the room as she climbed into her new car. Hugo was so excited that she said she couldn’t wait to tell her parents.
The prize car was donated by a former EHOVE guidance counselor, John Marett. After receiving the car, it first became part of the EHOVE curriculum. EHOVE Auto Tech and Auto Body students, along with their instructors, inspected and fixed up the interior and exterior of the car. More importantly, they corrected any problems and made sure it was mechanically sound and safe to drive.
