Instructor Chef Honored with Award

February 22, 2010

At the 10th Annual Scholarship Dinner at Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, EHOVE Instructor Chef Ashley Black was awarded with the Chef of the Year Award by the American Culinary Federation and the Sandusky Bay Area Chef’s Association.

Chef Black, a Norwalk resident, grew up in Vermilion and graduated from EHOVE’s culinary program in 2002, and Sullivan University in 2004 with an Associate’s Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts.  After moving around the country, and working in different restaurants and hotels, Black returned to Ohio and EHOVE as an Adult Education Instructor in the Culinary Arts program.

“The award was a big surprise,” said Chef Black.  “It’s a great feeling to know that your fellow coworkers and chapter members appreciate your work and support you.”

Chef Black is happy with her decision to return as an instructor at EHOVE.  “I believe in giving back to the people that have helped me get where I am today, that's why I decided to go into education.  Because of what my instructors and teachers did for me, I want to do that for someone else.  Share my passion for food and help them with theirs.”

Her former instructor and current coworker at EHOVE, Chef Michael Edwards, agrees that Black returning to the career center has been beneficial.  “Chef Black continues to give back to the program by helping students in the pastry arts profession.  She is an asset to EHOVE Career Center culinary arts program.”
