Adult Ed - Helping Students Work Toward College Degree

January 06, 2009

State makes going to college easier for all:

EHOVE Adult Ed programs can build toward degree

State Chancellor Eric Fingerhut’s new state mandate partnering adult technical educational programs with the university system will make a college degree easier and cheaper to obtain.

EHOVE Adult Education programs are among those affected, operating as part of the University System of Ohio under the Ohio Board of Regents to create an efficient, integrated workforce education system.

In the past, adult students who completed apprenticeships or work-force programs received little, if any, credit when they continued on to obtain a college degree. Those students would frequently have to start over again from scratch, delaying their entry into the workforce and adding extra educational expense. The new plan guarantees that credits will transfer toward a degree, making it easier to transfer among schools. All schools would operate on a semester system.

This integration will allow the Board of Regents to develop an efficient system for students who complete programs at adult workforce centers that are equivalent to technical programs offered at community colleges for college credit and develop clear pathways.

Fingerhut announced his plan last April, challenging Ohio colleges to produce 230,000 more college graduates by 2017 under a system that is more affordable and more closely linked to job creation.
