EHOVE selects next year's principal
EHOVE Career Center is proud to announce that one of its Assistant Directors, Erika Beckman of Republic, has been selected as principal starting in the 2015-2016 school year.
“After an extensive search process, it was clear that Erika was the top candidate for the principal position,” said EHOVE Superintendent Sharon Mastroianni. “Erika was a career technical student in high school so she understands the opportunities EHOVE has to offer students who want to immediately enter the workforce or transition to a post-secondary institution. She also brings an extensive background in business and industry so she has a clear vision of what employers are requiring of employees.”
As an Assistant Director at EHOVE since 2010, Beckman has managed the healthcare, technology, business and cosmetology programs in the high school, collaborated with BGSU Firelands to develop college pathways to offer on-transcript college credit to EHOVE students, directed virtual learning efforts and been heavily involved with curriculum development. She also has organized and overseen the school’s chapters of two national student organizations, SkillsUSA and Business Professionals of America.
“As a product of career-technical education myself, I have always been an advocate for career-technical education,” said Beckman. “When I attended, the career centers still had a semi-negative view from some of our community members and teachers from my home school. Personally, it was the best decision I made because I was able to go to college with a skill set and was ahead in my college classes. We offer our students a variety of opportunities and skill sets. The best part is they get to learn about a career and figure out if it is the best career choice for them before they graduate from high school.”
Beckman will take the helm from retiring principal Dale VanLerberghe, who is retiring after 40 years of service in education. She remembers that she and VanLerberghe both came to EHOVE in 2010. “At the time, he had 35 years of educational experience and I was a new administrator,” she said. “He has been an instrumental part to where I am today. With his guidance and mentorship these past five years, I can say I feel confident transitioning into the principal's position. He will be greatly missed. I have also gotten to know our board these past five years and look forward to working with them and Ms. Sharon Mastroianni to continue to be innovative and keep EHOVE in the forefront of career-technical education.”
Prior to EHOVE, Beckman taught Tech Prep Computer Aided Design (CAD) for six years at The Tech Center in Fremont and courses at Terra Community College. She gained plenty of industry experience working at ThyssenKrupp Atlas in Fostoria as a process analyst in the engineering department and as I.T. specialist focusing on materials management and production planning.
Beckman also has the education to match her experience. She has earned a Master of Education from the University of Toledo, a Bachelor of Science in Technology from Bowling Green State University, an Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering/CAD/CAM from Terra Community College and a Principal’s License from the University of Findlay.
Beckman and her husband of 15 years, Josh, have two daughters, Andra and Erin. They manage a hog facility on their property, where she handles the bookwork for the operation as well as the farmland. In her spare time, she enjoys spending plenty of time with her family at Cedar Point, camping, the beach or even just at home with their two dogs.
