Colton Wilson sometimes feels that his power wheelchair makes him stand out in the crowd as he moves through the busy hallways of EHOVE Career Center. What he discovered recently is that he’s a standout in the area of public speaking as well.

Wilson, a student in the Business and Marketing program at EHOVE from New London HS, participated in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) regional competition in February, taking second place with in the Interview Skills category, and first with in the Prepared Speech category. He moved on to the BPA state competition in Columbus from March 16-18, where his third-place award for his speech, “How the Internet has Influenced Entrepreneurship and the Consumer Market,” qualified him for the national competition to be held in Boston on May 5-9.

“It’s a great honor, and I’m proud to represent EHOVE,” Wilson said in a recent interview punctuated by soft-spoken thoughtfulness and humor. “The experience was surreal. I don’t usually participate in school functions because of the obvious difficulties,” he remarked, indicating his wheelchair. “But we all have a voice, and I appreciate the opportunity, moving forward.” A fan of CNN and an avid follower of current political and world events, Wilson’s plans after graduating from high school involve “helping people in some way, and being productive” in some fashion. “I do enjoy the hospital setting,” he mused; then added, with a wry smile, “though not from a patient’s standpoint.”

Experience with public speaking may serve Wilson’s expressed desire to help others in the future, according to Barbara Wrabel, Community Outreach Specialist for the Huron County Board of DD. “Colton is incredibly bright, articulate and determined, in his own quiet way,” she said. “He truly cares about the welfare of others, and would be a wonderful public advocate for the rights and issues of people with physical and other disabilities in Ohio.”

Business Professionals of America (BPA) is a student organization offered to students in relevant programs at EHOVE.  Members contribute to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.  Programs involved in BPA at EHOVE include Computer Network Tech, Visual Media Tech and Business & Marketing.

"BPA provides students with learning experiences that provide a great extension of their career tech programs,” said EHOVE Business & Marketing Instructor and Lead BPA Advisor Jennifer Steinbrick.  “In addition to these hands-on learning experiences, students also establish employability and leadership skills that will help to prepare them to be valuable members of the workforce."

Ohio has the second largest presence in the BPA organization consisting of 7700 secondary and post-secondary members.  At the State competition, 35 EHOVE students competed in a variety of categories.  Below are the results from the 18 EHOVE students who achieved a score to place in the top ten.
