Community Service Award

At Bowling Green State University Firelands College’s annual Recognition Program on April 24, Sharon Mastroianni, a Monroeville resident and superintendent of EHOVE Career Center, Milan, was awarded the 2015 Community Service Award.

The Community Service Award is given to an individual or organization from the community who has, in an extraordinary manner, participated in the growth, development, or promotion of BGSU Firelands and the Firelands community.

A former student at BGSU Firelands, Mastroianni was nominated for her commitment to furthering the mission of BGSU Firelands through strategic educational partnerships and her strong board leadership for the College.

Mastroianni started at EHOVE as the career-technical supervisor in 1985 and through a series of promotions became the superintendent in 2006.  She has more than 30 years of experience in education and, in addition to EHOVE, has taught at Christie Lane School, Norwalk, and Golden Rule School, Cambridge, Ohio.  She has also been an adjunct faculty member at Ashland University since 2001.

“Sharon has committed an entire career to education and she is a highly respected leader in the community,” said Dean of BGSU Firelands William Balzer.  “Under her visionary leadership, EHOVE has become an even more vital provider of education and training to provide career and education pathways for students here in our community.  Her efforts have helped build the workforce of the future and strengthen the economy of the entire Firelands region.”

Among her many accolades, Mastroianni was inducted into the Monroeville High School Hall of Fame in 2012, awarded the BGSU Firelands Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2008, the Athena Award from the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005, the Leadership Award from Huron County Project Leadership in 2004, two Distinguished Service Awards from the Ohio Association for Career & Technical Education in 2001, and the Supervisor of the Year from Ohio Association of Supervisors and Work Study Coordinators in 1997.

Mastroianni is also active in the community and serves on several boards and committees including the BGSU Firelands Development Board, Fisher-Titus Medical Center Finance Committee, Goodwill Industries of Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Counties Executive Board, and she is the field director of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. for Ohio.

Mastroianni attended BGSU Firelands from 1976 to 1978.  She transferred to the Bowling Green campus and earned a bachelor’s in 1980 and a master’s degree in 1983 both in education
