Survival Summit 2016

On January 16, EHOVE Adult Career Center’s Fire Academy and Northern Ohio Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society (FOOLS) hosted a free conference for firefighters and their spouses.

Participants attended breakout sessions provided by some of the top presenters in the Fire Service today. Mental health issues, leadership, strategies/tactics, cancer prevention, fire inspection procedures, and many other relevant courses were attended. Continuing education credits were issued to attendees through the EHOVE Fire Academy and the EHOVE EMS Academy.  Local health professionals from Fisher Titus Medical Center and Firelands Regional Medical Center presented sessions for responders and spouses.

E.J. Mascaro of the North Charleston Fire Department in South Carolina was the keynote speaker. His message of survival from three tours of special operations combat in Iraq and Afghanistan was well received.  His motivational speech focused on the importance of leadership, commitment, and dedication to serving our communities.

In total, 89 first responders and 32 spouses attended. Most hailed from Ohio, but some came from Indiana and even one from Wheeling, West Virginia.

The spouses who attended this unique training event received specialty training on mental health issues, CPR/first aid, roundtable discussions, aromatherapy, and social media  as well as free massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials.  This event was a collaboration of the many great programs offered at EHOVE Career Center and were sponsored by Northern Ohio FOOLS.

Even the EHOVE High School Cosmetology students got involved by donating their time to provide hair, skin and nail services to the conference participants.  The students’ efforts resulted in a $250 donation Northern Ohio FOOLS to one of their classmates who is fighting Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“This event is cutting edge training,” said Mascaro.  “To involve the spouses is huge. I travel all over the country and have never witnessed a training event like this. Excellent job!”

“I’ve been to a lot of training events and have never seen this interaction and  support!” said Firefighter Paul Combs of Bryan Fire Department.  “Great job!”

“The Norther Ohio FOOLS and EHOVE Fire Academy host FDIC quality training events for FREE,” said LT Chris Gilpin of Union Township Fire Department and President of First In-Last Out Fire Equipment and Training, LLC.  “This is truly a testament of their commitment to training, brotherhood, and leaving the fire service better than we found it.”
