EHOVE joins launch of Adult Diploma program
More than one million Ohio adults who haven't received a high school diploma can now begin taking steps to earn one as select career centers and community colleges kick off a pilot program that will provide free job training and award high school diplomas through the Ohio Department of Education.
Leaders of EHOVE Adult Career Center’s program said they are now accepting applications from Ohioans ages 22 and older who are looking to earn high school diplomas while simultaneously receiving industry credentials.
"EHOVE is excited to join this effort in offering the Adult Diploma program to help people earn a diploma and get quality training within an in-demand career field,” said Executive Adult Director Ben Chaffee, Jr.
Participants enrolling in the Adult Diploma program will train for in-demand jobs through their choice of EHOVE’s occupational programs of Culinary, EMT, Firefighter, Medical Assistant, Nurse Aide, Patient Care Tech, Professional Business Specialist or Welding. Technical centers serving different regions of Ohio may offer additional occupational training choices.
EHOVE has partnered with Penta Career Center, who is facilitating the pilot grant for this highly anticipated, state-funded program. Vanguard-Sentinel Career & Technology Center and Terra State Community College have also joined the effort in this region.
“The Adult Diploma program is set up to help students succeed,” said Assistant Adult Ed Director Laura Dowdell. “They choose the training that fits their interests so they can complete the program, enter the career field, and then excel and advance.”
Learning happens through real-world, real-work problems and projects through programs fully credentialed through the Ohio Department of Higher Education. The program is competency-based, allowing students to work at their own pace. This component is meant to aid students, most of whom are trying to balance training with work and family.
Chaffee and Dowdell said that this new opportunity for adults to earn a diploma and train for an in-demand career at the same time will make a real difference in the lives of the participants and their families.
