EHOVE Teacher Academy students gain valuable experience
Three from Huron complete internships in area elementary schools before graduation

EHOVE Teacher Academy student Adam Zadell (Huron) leads a culminating activity he prepared where 3 rd graders read their written stories to 1 st graders.

Most teachers didn’t get a whole lot of classroom experience until their junior year of college. But three teachers-to-be from Huron have been spending many valuable hours in local elementary schools now, during their senior year. More than 300 hours, in fact.

As seniors enrolled in EHOVE Career Center’s Teacher Academy, they are gaining teaching experience well ahead of traditional students, most of whom must wait three years to act on their teaching dream. As part of the Teacher Academy curriculum, students are assigned 4-6 week internships at elementary schools to gain exposure to multiple age levels and subjects.

The course is offered in partnership with BGSU Firelands to provide a pathway from high school to college and the teacher education field. Students also receive 6 college credits.

Huron High School seniors Matthew Collinsworth, Jerica Schick, and Adam Zadell are getting a head start on their teaching career path through the Teacher Academy.

Charla McAbier, EHOVE’s Teacher Academy Coordinator, said the enthusiasm the teens bring to the classroom can be mutually beneficial.

“ Teacher Academy students are eager to try their ideas and the younger students will let them know if they’ve made a connection or not,” said McAbier. “There is no replacement for an actual classroom experience with students. We are grateful for our partnerships with our associate schools that allow this learning to occur.”
