Work Experience


5th Quarter - Summer Internships

What is 5th Quarter?
The 5th Quarter Summer Internship Program is an on-the-job, paid or unpaid, summer training experience for high school students between their junior and senior years. Students will gain direct workplace skills and competencies through a partnership between business, education, students and parents. The goal of the 5th Quarter experience is to give students an opportunity to develop additional skills that strengthen personal qualities important in the workplace.

Businesses commit to employ a student for a minimum of 150 hours between the end of the school year and the beginning of the next school year. There is no limit to the amount of additional hours that a student may work. Participants that complete all requirements of their summer internship may qualify for continued part-time work as early as September of their senior year.

Who qualifies?
At the end of the first semester of their junior year, students who meet all the following criteria will have an opportunity to apply for 5th Quarter:

  • Grades of “B” or better in all Career-Tech classes
  • 3.0 average or better in academic classes with no grade lower than a “C”
  • No more than 4.5 days absent/tardy
  • No major and/or repeated discipline offenses
  • Is “on track” for graduation
  • Recommended by their program instructor

The application process begins at the end of January. Additional information is available through your program instructor or the 5th Quarter coordinator.

Senior Work Based Learning (Early Placement)

What is it?
This is an opportunity for qualifying seniors to work during the lab portion of the school day, in a job that relates to their career technical training. Work Based Learning begins in the senior year for up to 3 days per week, as early as the 1st Monday in February. Qualifying seniors will get a head start in the working world.

Who qualifies?
At the end of the first semester of their senior year, students who meet all the following criteria will have an opportunity to apply for Work Based Learning:

  • “B” or better in lab and related
  • 3.0 or better in all other classes
  • Not been absent more than 15 days in the junior and senior years
  • No major and/or repeated discipline offenses (discipline will be monitored for eligibility and continuation in the program)
  • Must pass all proficiency tests
  • On track to graduate
  • Must write a 1-2 page typed report describing the reason for a work-based learning experience
  • Recommended by program instructor

Eligibility is checked again at the end of the 3rd Nine Week (March 20th). All eligibility requirements are the same as above except that a 2.0 average in all classes except lab and related will be accepted.
